SAN ANTONIO ? UTSA senior All-American Ryanne Dupree will represent the UTSA women’s track and field team at the NCAA Midwest Regional Championships held this Friday-Saturday, May 25-26, in Des Moines, Iowa.
Already automatically qualified in the heptathlon for the NCAA Outdoor Championships on June 6-9 in Sacramento, Calif., Dupree will make her fourth Midwest Regional appearance and compete in the 100-meter hurdles, high jump and long jump at historic Drake Stadium.
Athletes from 12 states (Colorado, Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Montana, Nebraska, New Mexico, North Dakota, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Texas and Wyoming) will compete for spots in the NCAA Outdoor Championships with the top five finishers in each event (top three relay teams) receiving invitations to the national meet. At-large competitors then will be selected following the four regional meets.
Friday will be a busy day for Dupree as she will compete in the high jump at 2:15 p.m., the long jump at 4 p.m. and the 100m hurdles prelims at 3:30 p.m. The hurdles final is set for 3:55 p.m. on Saturday. Dupree has a track record of success at Drake Stadium, winning back-to-back Drake Relays heptathlon crowns in 2004-05.
Dupree enters the meet ranked third in the hurdles as she broke a seven year-old school record with a 13.25 clocking at the Kansas Relays in April. She is tied for seventh in the long jump with a personal-best 20-6 ? winning measure at the SLC Outdoor and is tied for 17th in the high jump with a career-high 5-8 ? clearance in placing second at conference. Nationally, Dupree ranks third in the heptathlon (5,818), 14th in the hurdles, 30th in the long jump and 58th in the high jump.
The East Central High product is coming an impressive individual effort at the SLC Outdoor Championships earlier this month. She won the heptathlon with a meet-record 5,593 points, took top honors in the 100m hurdles and long jump, finished second in the high jump and helped the 4x100m relay team place third. Dupree’s 39.5 points made her the meet’s high-point scorer and marked the highest point total since Texas State’s LaJuana Lovett scored 43 in 2004 and the fifth-best tally all-time. Following the meet, she was named Athlete of the Year for the third time in her career and Outstanding Track Performer for the second time.
Senior Lyndsey Sidney also qualified for the Midwest Regional 100m hurdles but will not compete due to injury.
