STARKVILLE, Miss. ? The awards keep rolling in for UTSA senior Jessica Rogers as she was named Wednesday to the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) All-South Region Second Team.
Rogers was one of two third basemen named to the second team ? along with Candy Shumpert of Mississippi Valley State ? and one of four players from the Southland Conference (Ragan Blake, Texas State; Brooke Brodhead, McNeese State; Katie Jones, Texas-Arlington) to appear on the squad. The selection is the third all-region honor for Rogers, who earlier this week was named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District VI First Team for the third time. In 2004 she earned first-team accolades, followed by a second team selection in 2005 as a junior.
A four-year starter at third base, Rogers recently earned first-team All-SLC honors for the fourth consecutive season ? one of only 11 players in SLC history to accomplish that feat ? and was named to the All-SLC Tournament team for the second time last weekend. The 2005 SLC Student-Athlete, Player & Hitter of the Year, she demolished three league career records this season ? home runs (69), runs batted in (192) and total bases (525) ? and also set school standards for runs (159), hits (281), extra-base hits (104) and at-bats (732). Rogers finished this season with a .404 batting average (74-for-183), nine doubles, 18 home runs, 53 RBIs, a .749 slugging percentage, 11 walks, a .442 on-base percentage and two sacrifice flies.
Thirty-two student-athletes from the Ohio Valley, Southeastern, Southern, Southland, Southwestern Athletic and Sun Belt Conferences and Conference USA make up the All-South Region Teams. The first team featured 12 players from 11 SEC schools ? including nine from top-five ranked Alabama, Tennessee and LSU ? and one from No. 23 Louisiana-Lafayette.
Rogers now will appear on the All-America ballot to be voted upon later this month.
