Women?s basketball inks two for 2007-08 season

SAN ANTONIO ? UTSA women’s basketball coach Rae Rippetoe-Blair announced Tuesday the signings of Onika Anderson (Pine Bluff, Ark./Watson Chapel HS/Carl Albert JC) and Whitney York (College Station, Texas/Bryan HS) to National Letters of Intent.

Anderson, a 5-10 forward, averaged a double-double during her two-year stint at Carl Albert JC with 17.9 points and 11.7 rebounds per game. As a freshman, she posted a team-best 19.9 points and 9.9 rebounds per contest for the Vikings. She garnered All-America honors and was named to the NJCAA All-Region II first team. As a sophomore, she again collected first-team all-region honors, while leading the team in scoring (16.0 ppg) and rebounding (13.4 rpg). The Pine Bluff, Ark., native shot a team-best 50.6 percent from the field and ranked second on the squad with 42 steals.

“One of our goals for this recruiting period was to find a player that will make an impact next season and Onika was just what we were looking for.” Rippetoe-Blair said. “She’s the type of player that will rebound and provide a post presence for us.”

York, a 5-6 guard, led the Lady Vikings to a 35-6 overall record and a District 13-5A Championship with a perfect 12-0 mark during her senior year. Last season, she averaged 17.4 points and 5.4 assists per game. She also recorded a team-leading 3.5 steals per contest. York was tabbed first-team all-state and academic all-state, was a McDonalds All-America nominee and named to the TABC All-Star team. She also earned All-Brazos Valley first-team honors this past season.

“York is a true point guard we wanted from the start of the signing period and we were happy to sign her.” Rippetoe-Blair said. “Look for her to compete for the point position as a freshman. She also has great court vision.’
