NACOGDOCHES ? Senior All-American Ryanne Dupree and junior Ashley Allen occupy the top two spots of the women’s heptathlon after day one of the Southland Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships held Friday at Fletcher Garner Track.

Dupree, the conference champion and meet record-holder in this event, has tallied 3,498 points through four events, while Allen is in second with 3,009. Junior Kari Michalik also is in scoring range in sixth with 2,784 points, while freshman Haylee Allen, Ashley’s younger sister, is in 11th with 2,604.

Dupree took a commanding lead after the first event, clocking a 13.62 for 1,033 points in the 100-meter hurdles. She also cleared a personal-best 5-7 3/4 in the high jump for 879 more points, and measured 40-4 3/4 in the shot put before concluding day one with a 24.81 in the 200m.

Dupree ranks second in the NCAA with her school record of 5,818 posted at the Texas Relays in April. A redshirt in 2006, Dupree broke the SLC Outdoor record with 5,485 points in winning the 2005 heptathlon. She also grabbed gold in the 100m hurdles and long jump and helped the 4x100m relay to victory en route to earning SLC Athlete of the Year, Outstanding Track Performer and High Point Scorer (28.5) honors two years ago.

Allen moved into second place following a 5-4 1/4 clearance in the high jump after opening with a 14.64 in the 100m hurdles. She also recorded a 35-3 mark in the shot put and a 26.31 in the deuce.

Michalik recorded opening-day marks of 15.59 in the 100m hurdles, 4-11 1/2 in the high jump, 35-3 in the shot put and 25.86 in the 200m.

Leah Matthews of host Stephen F. Austin is in third place with 2,916, followed by Tabitha Riley of SFA and Jamie Spivey of Sam Houston State with 2,884 and 2,860, respectively.

The SLC Outdoor Championships continue Saturday and Sunday.
