2007 Southland Conference Outdoor Championships ? May 4-6
Fletcher Garner Track at Homer Bryce Stadium ? Nacogdoches, Texas

Roadrunners In Search Of First Outdoor Title Since 2001 This Weekend: The UTSA men’s track & field team will attempt to sweep the Southland Conference Indoor and Outdoor titles for the first time in school history when it competes at the SLC Outdoor Championships this weekend. Twenty-six Roadrunners will travel to Fletcher Garner Track at Homer Bryce Stadium for the three-day meet that begins on Friday.

Quartet Leads The Conference: Seniors Larry Brooks (800 meters/1:49.83), Brandon Buteaux (decathlon/7,342) and Benson Cheserek (3,000-meter steeplechase/9:00.58) and sophomore Gaston Griffin (400 meters/46.97) enter this weekend’s meet leading the league in their respective event. Brooks, Cheserek and Griffin all have qualified for the NCAA Midwest Regional (May 25-26/Des Moines, Iowa), while Buteaux has provisionally qualified for the NCAA Outdoor Championships (June 6-9/Scaramento, Calif.). Nine other Roadrunners rank among the top three in the conference coming into this weekend’s championships.

Buteaux Ranks Fifth Nationally In Decathlon: Senior Brandon Buteaux made the most out of his first decathlon in nearly two years by winning the 80th Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays title on April 5 with an NCAA provisional qualifying 7,342 points. The San Antonio native, who redshirted last year’s outdoor campaign, ranks fifth in the country and he shattered his previous personal best of 7,218 points set at the 2004 Texas Relays. He entered the final five events as the day one leader with 3,871 points.

UTSA Has Eight Regional Qualifiers This Season: Ten UTSA athletes have qualified for this year’s NCAA Midwest Regional in eight events thus far in 2007. Seniors Larry Brooks (800m/1:49.83) and Benson Cheserek (3,000m steeplechase/9:00.58), juniors Luke Johnson (shot put & hammer/16.85m & 56.60m) and Will Vese (110m hurdles/13.92), sophomore Gaston Griffin (400m/46.97), freshman Johnathan Whittaker (high jump/2.10m) and the 400-meter relay team of freshman Teddy Williams, senior Scott Briscoe and juniors Cedric Harris and Steven Brown (40.55) all have assured themselves of spots at this year’s regional meet. Five of those marks came at the Texas Twilight two weeks ago and Vese and Brooks rank among the top 10 in the regional rankings. This year’s regional championships meet is scheduled for May 25-26 in Des Moines, Iowa.

2006 Recap: Larry Brooks and T.R. Sissel won individual titles to lead UTSA to a second-place finish at the Southland Conference Outdoor Championships held at Maverick Stadium in Arlington. Brooks led a one-two finish by the Roadrunners in the 800 meters, clocking a 1:51.36 for his second outdoor crown in the event in the past three years. Sissel moved to the front of the field in the 400-meter hurdles at the second hurdle and never looked back, circling with a time of 51.83 for his first individual SLC crown. Combined with Bryan Wolfe’s win in the decathlon the day before, the Roadrunners captured three individual crowns in the meet to push their all-time total to 31. The team race turned into a battle between defending outdoor champion Sam Houston State and the Roadrunners. The Bearkats pulled away for their second consecutive title with 168 points, while UTSA was second with 131 for the first runner-up finish in school history.
