Dupree demolishes school record with runner-up showing in Texas Relays heptathlon

· Day 2 results

AUSTIN —
UTSA senior All-American Ryanne Dupree demolished her own school record in the heptathlon, scoring 5,817 points to finish second in the Texas Relays heptathlon on Thursday at Myers Stadium. Junior Ashley Allen met the NCAA provisional-qualifying standard with a career performance in the same seven-event competition.

Dupree met the NCAA automatic-qualifying standard of 5,500 points for the second time this season in breaking her own school record of 5,584 set last month at the UTSA Relays. The 233-point improvement placed her second behind Diana Pickler of Washington State, who posted 6,204 points. Her twin sister Julie — also of Washington State — placed third with 5,734.

Dupree was in second place after the first four events on Wednesday and maintained that position throughout the long jump, javelin and 800 meters Thursday. The East Central High product leaped to a regional qualifying 20-1 measure in the long jump, posted a 126-8 throw in the javelin and covered 800m in 2:19.70 in besting her previous career total of 5,606 recorded at this meet last year while competing unattached.

The strong field of 19 competitors saw five athletes meet the automatic standard, while 11 additional multi-eventers finished above the provisional mark of 5,050 including Allen, who tallied 5,225 points for 10th place in the loaded field. The Jim Ned High product bettered her previous personal best of 5,076 registered at the 2006 Drake Relays by 149 points. That effort makes Allen, the 2007 Southland Conference Indoor pentathlon champion, the No. 3 performer in school history behind Dupree and former All-American Rhonda Ray (5,323).

In other action, the 4x800m relay team raced to a 9:04.89 to finish 11th and freshman Jessica Jones clocked a 1:03.67 in the 400m hurdles prelims, but did not advance to the finals.

The Texas Relays continue Friday at Myers Stadium.
