SAN ANTONIO - No. 3 seed UTSA advanced to the Southland Conference finals for the third year in a row with a 4-2 win against No. 2 seed Texas-Arlington on Saturday afternoon at the 2007 Southland Conference Men's Tennis Tournament.
The Roadrunners improved their record to 12-11 on the year, while the Mavericks closed their season with an 11-9 mark.
UTSA opened the match winning the doubles point at No. 1 and No. 3 to take the early 1-0 lead.
In singles action, sophomore Robin Fernandes increased UTSA's lead to 2-0 when he came off the court with a 7-5, 6-2 victory at the No. 2 spot. The Mavericks got on the board with a straight-set win (6-3, 6-2) at No. 3, but sophomore Andre Moreira gave the Roadrunners a 3-1 lead after winning 7-6, 6-1 at No. 4.
Junior Adam Becker clinched the match for UTSA when he defeated Gonzalo Bienzobas in three-set thriller at the No. 6 positions. Becker dropped the first set, 6-4, but bounced back to win the next two sets and send the Roadrunners back to the conference championship match.
UTSA will face top seed Texas A&M-Corpus Christi at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday.
