UTSA adds Rhodes to 2007 signing class

SAN ANTONIO ? The UTSA volleyball program announced Tuesday the signing of outside hitter Gena Rhodes (Lake Jackson, Texas/San Jacinto JC) to a National Letter of Intent. She will join the Roadrunners for the 2007 season.

“Gena brings experience and maturity that we need at the outside hitter position,” head coach Laura Neugebauer-Groff said. “After losing five seniors and with a young squad returning, we felt we needed to add an experienced leader and expect Gena to fill that role.”

A two-year starter at San Jacinto Junior College, Rhodes is coming off a sophomore season that saw her earn All-Region 14 and all-conference honors after leading the Ravens to an eighth-place finish at the 2006 NJCAA Tournament.

As a freshman, the Lake Jackson native earned All-America honors and led San Jacinto to its first NJCAA Tournament since 1993. She ranked among the national leaders with 468 kills and finished third in school history with four kills per game.

A standout in the classroom, Rhoades also earned Region 14 All-Academic honors and was a Dean’s List student.

Rhodes joins Valorie Rogers, Kendra Rowland and Jordan White, who signed letters of intent during the early-signing period last November.
