BEAUMONT – The UTSA women’s tennis team closed its regular season with a 4-3 loss at Lamar on Sunday morning in Southland Conference action.
The Roadrunners fell to 12-8 on the year and 6-5 in conference play, while the Lady Cardinals improved to 12-9 and 7-3 in league play.
UTSA took the 1-0 lead with wins at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles.
The Roadrunners then pushed their lead 2-0 via a default at No. 6 singles. However, Lamar tied the match at two with wins at the No. 2 and No. 3 positions. The Lady Cardinals then grabbed a 3-2 lead sophomore Tanaya Hasking dropped a 7-5, 6-2 decision at No. 4. Freshman Holly Phillips knotted the match at three with her three-set win against Manami Kuroda (6-4, 1-6, 6-3).
The match was decided at the top seeds. Lamar’s Kaltrina Harbuzi dropped the first set, 7-6, to sophomore Karen Scida, but she rallied to win the next the two sets (6-0, 6-2) to clinch the match.
UTSA returns to action in next week’s 2007 SLC Women’s Tennis Tournament, which will be played at the UTSA Tennis Center from April 20-22.
