SAN ANTONIO – The UTSA men's track & field team gets the outdoor campaign underway in earnest this weekend when it takes a squad of 25 athletes to the David Noble Angelo State Relays on Saturday. The only Roadrunner not scheduled to compete is All-American Larry Brooks.
All-American Brandon Buteaux, fresh of his impressive victory in the decathlon at last week’s Texas Relays, will compete in the discus and pole vault this weekend. Buteaux was named the Southland Conference’s Men’s Track & Field Athlete of the Week on Tuesday after he scored an NCAA provisional and personal-best 7,342 points in his first decathlon in nearly two years.
Junior hurdler Will Vese will look to continue his hot start to the outdoor campaign. Vese, who has recorded NCAA Regional qualifiers in each of the first three meets of the season, will run in the 110-meter hurdles in addition to performing in the triple jump.
Junior Luke Johnson – who collected an NCAA Regional qualifying mark in the shot put last week (personal-best 16.85m/55-3 ½) – once again will pull triple duty, as he will compete in all three throwing events (discus, hammer, shot put). Freshman Chris Koenig and Ryan McMakin will join Johnson in all three events.
Freshman Johnathan Whittaker returns to action for the first time in a month. Whittaker was scheduled to perform in the high jump last weekend at the Texas Relays but did not compete due to the inclement weather in the state capital. He leaped to an NCAA Regional 2.10m (6-10 ¾) at the UTSA Relays, which was his first collegiate outdoor meet.
Junior Stephen Brown, a 2006 national qualifier in the long jump, will make his much-anticipated season debut. Brown will run in the 100 meters and also be a part of the Roadrunners’ 400- and 1,600-meter relay teams.
