Roadrunners snap three-match skid with 4-3 win on Saturday

SAN ANTONIO - The UTSA women's tennis team snapped its three-match losing streak with a 4-3 victory against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Saturday afternoon at the UTSA Tennis Center.

The Roadrunners improved to 10-6 overall and 4-3 in conference play, while the Islanders dropped to 3-11 and 1-5.

UTSA started off the match winning the doubles point. Sophomore Monika Drabkova and freshman Holly Phillips teamed up for an easy 8-1 win against Amanda Brahim and Alexandra Valarezo at the No. 3 position. Junior Tanya Hasking and sophomore Karen Scida then clinched the point with an 8-6 victory over Carmen Abeaboeru and Erika Iriarte at No.1.

In singles action, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi took a 2-1 lead after Iriarte and Nina Ciric came off the court with straight-set wins at the No. 2 and No. 3 slots, respectively. Drabkova's 6-1, 7-5 victory at No. 4 tied the match at two and sophomore Eva Silvester put UTSA ahead by one with her 6-3, 7-5 win at No. 6.

However, the Islanders tied the match at three when Alexandra Valarezo defeated Phillips in straight sets (6-4, 6-4) at the No. 5 position. The match came down to the top seeds; Scida and Abeaboeru. Scida won the first set 7-6, but Abeaboeru forced a deciding third set with a 6-3 win. Scida clinched the match for UTSA by winning the final set, 7-6.

The Roadrunners return to action on at 1 p.m. on Thursday, April 5, against Northwestern State.
