HOUSTON – Sophomore Monica Gibbs’ 13th double-double of the year helped lift the UTSA women’s basketball team to a 67-52 victory against Southeastern Louisiana on Wednesday night in the first round of the O’Reilly Auto Parts/Southland Conference Tournament. The Roadrunners won their fifth game in a row and improved to 14-15, while the Lady Lions saw their season come to an end at 17-13.
Gibbs, who collected her sixth straight double-double, led four UTSA players in double figures 13 points and she also grabbed 14 rebounds and dished out eight assists. Senior Vivian Ewalefo and junior Terrie Davis each scored a game-high 15 points, while sophomore Tia Bogan added 14.
The Roadrunners scored the first seven points of the contest and never trailed, After a basket by Jazmin Cain put Southeastern Louisiana on the board with 16:20 remaining in the first half, UTSA went on a 14-9 run to push its lead to 21-11 with 5:59 to go before halftime. UTSA went into the locker room with a 29-18 advantage.
The Roadrunners opened the second the half on a 16-8 run that increased their lead to 18 points at 44-26. Whitnee Miller’s jumper with 6:08 to go pulled the Lady Lions within 11 at 52-41, but it would be the closet they would get the rest of the way.
Miller scored a team-high 14 points for SLU, while Brenita Williams posted a double-double with 13 points and 10 boards.
UTSA faces No. 1 seed Texas-Arlington at 2:30 p.m. in Friday's second semifinal.
