BOCA RATON, Fla. – The UTSA men’s tennis team dropped a 5-2 decision at Florida Atlantic on Friday afternoon at the FAU Tennis Complex.
The Roadrunners now have dropped four consecutive matches and their record dipped to 9-9 on the season. The Owls improved to 9-10 overall.
Florida Atlantic began the day by winning the doubles point with victories at the No. 2 and No. 3 positions. Freshman Rodrigo Morgado and junior Adam Becker teamed up for UTSA's lone win with a 9-7 decision at No. 1 doubles.
In singles action, the Owls won four of the six matches. FAU won at the No. 6 slot via default and then took a 3-0 lead when Corey Smith handed senior Nate Avila a 6-2, 6-4 loss at No. 4. UTSA battled back to pull within one point (3-2). Becker put the Roadrunners on the board with a straight-set win at No. 5, while sophomore Robin Fernandes won a tough three-set match (3-6, 6-2,7-5) against Karol Szmurlo at No. 2. However, FAU won the last two matches for the 5-2 victory.
UTSA continues its Florida trip at South Florida on Sunday, April 1, in Tampa Fla. First serve is scheduled for 10 a.m.
