WACO — Senior Aimee Murray collected three hits and a run batted in and senior Jessica Rogers hit her team-leading 13th home run of the season, but it was not enough, as No. 12 Baylor swept a doubleheader from UTSA, 4-1 and 9-1, on Wednesday evening at Getterman Stadium.

Baylor used strong pitching in game one and an offensive explosion in game two to extend its winning streak to six games and move to 32-9 on the season. The Roadrunners, who now have played seven games against teams ranked in the top 15, fall to 18-20 on the year.

Murray was 2-for-3 in the opener and had a hit and the only RBI for UTSA in the nightcap. Rogers had a hit in both contests, including her 64th career homer, the only extra-base hit by either team in the first game.

Baylor broke open a scoreless game one with three runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. A two-run single by Alex Coyler and an infield single by Kirsten Shortridge highlighted the five-hit frame.

UTSA responded with Rogers’ solo blast to left field in the top of the sixth to cut the deficit to 3-1, but the Bears answered with an RBI infield single by Shortridge to push the lead back to three runs. Shortridge, the starting pitcher, stranded junior Kim Chavez, who singled on the infield with one out, at first base to end the game.

Junior Janeille Nickels (9-8) was solid in the circle for UTSA, limiting a potent Baylor offense to just one run on four hits and recording four strikeouts. Shortridge (10-3) earned the win for the Bears, striking out seven and holding the Roadrunners to one run on five hits.

Baylor jumped out to a 8-0 lead after two innings in the nightcap and cruised to a 9-1 run-ruling. Tiffany Wesley led off the first with a double, moved to third on an infield single by Nicole Wesley and scored on a groundout by Ashley Monceaux. Brette Reagan followed with a two-run homer to put the Bears up 3-0 after one. Reagan had a two-run double in the second to highlight a five-run frame.

UTSA pushed a run across in the top of the fifth. Junior Kourtney Jones walked and later scored on a single down the left field line by Murray.

Brittany Turner allowed just one run on four hits in running her record to 3-1 on the year. Junior Amanda Nikolenko gave up eight earned runs on 13 hits in falling to 9-12.

The Roadrunners face rival Texas State in a three-game Southland Conference this Friday-Saturday, March 30-31, in San Marcos.
