UTSA suffers first Southland Conference loss of season on Sunday

ARLINGTON – Texas-Arlington rallied from a 3-2 deficit and handed the UTSA men’s tennis team a 4-3 setback, its first Southland Conference defeat of the year, on Sunday at the UTA Tennis Complex.

The Roadrunners saw their record fall to 9-7 overall and 3-1 in conference play, while the Mavericks improved to 5-4 and remained perfect in league play (4-0).

UTA opened the match winning all three double matches for the early 1-0 lead.

In singles action, UTA upped its lead to 2-0 when Diego Mattar defeated sophomore Robin Fernandes, 6-2, 6-2 at the No. 1 slot. However, the Roadrunners stormed back to take a 3-2 lead. Freshman Rodrigo Morgado put UTSA on the board with a straight-set win at the No. 2 position (6-4, 6-1), while sophomore Andre Moreira’s 6-3, 6-3 victory at the No. 3 spot tied the match at two. Freshman Nenad Maric then put the Roadrunners ahead with a three-set win at No. 4 (6-1, 1-6, 7-6). However, Dimitry Minkin tied the match at three with his win at No. 5.

The match came down to the No. 6 matchup between junior Adam Becker and Gonzalo Bienzobas. Down one set, Becker rallied from a 5-2 deficit in the second frame to force a third set. With the final set tied at six, Bienzobas won the tiebreaker 7-4 to clinch the match for UTA.

UTSA returns home to host Louisiana-Lafayette at 1 p.m. on Saturday, March 24.
