SAN ANTONIO – The UTSA women’s tennis team dominated Southland Conference foe Stephen F. Austin, 7-0, on Sunday afternoon at the UTSA Tennis Center. The Roadrunners, who improved to 9-3 overall and 3-1 in SLC play, now have won nine of their last 10 matches. The Ladyjacks fell to 3-7 and remained winless in league play (0-3).
The Roadrunners took the early 1-0 lead by winning all three doubles matches. At No. 3, sophomore Monika Drabkova and freshman Holly Phillips paired up for an 8-0 win against Tatiana Smolnikova and Rijalda Zejnic. Junior Tanya Hasking and sophomore Karen Scida then sealed the doubles point with an 8-6 victory against Laura Harrison and Roxana Enica at the No. 1 position. The tandem of Hasking and Scida now have won eight of their last 10 matches and have posted a 9-3 record and 3-1 mark in SLC play.
The Roadrunners won all six singles matches in straight sets. Hasking quickly disposed of Lauren Nowicki, 6-1, 6-1 at No. 4, improving her overall record to 8-1. Phillips took care of Smolnikova, 6-2, 6-2, at the No. 6 position to give UTSA a commanding 3-0 lead. Drabkova’s 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 5 singles clinched the match for the Roadrunners. The Prague, Czech Republic, native collected her fourth consecutive win at No. 5 singles.
UTSA returns to action Thursday, March 22, against Illinois. First serve is scheduled for 3 p.m. at the UTSA Tennis Center.
