UTSA hands Sam Houston State 5-2 defeat

SAN ANTONIO – The UTSA women’s tennis team collected its second Southland Conference win of the season with a 5-2 victory against Sam Houston State on Saturday at the UTSA Tennis Center.

The Roadrunners, who have won seven of their last eight matches, improved to 8-3 on the season and 2-1 in SLC play, while the Lady Bearkats dipped to 5-3 overall and 2-1 in league play.

UTSA won took the doubles point for the early 1-0 lead. Junior Tanya Hasking and sophomore Karen Scida had their six-match winning streak snapped at the No. 1 spot when Lata Assudani and Irina Sotnikova collected an 8-5 victory. However, the Roadrunners won at the No. 2 and No. 3 doubles positions to pick up the point.

The Lady Bearkats evened the match at one when Sotnikova won at No. 1 singles against sophomore Nathalie Wallin, who retired after the first set. UTSA increased its lead to 3-1 when Hasking and sophomore Monika Drabkova collected wins at No. 4 and No. 5, respectively. Ashley Longoria’s straight-set win (7-5. 6-3) against freshman Holly Phillips at the No. 6 position cut the deficit to 3-2, but sophomore Sandra Kukla clinched the match with a 6-7, 7-5, 11-9 victory against Assudani at No. 2.

UTSA returns to action against Stephen F. Austin on Sunday. First serve is slated for 10 a.m. at the UTSA Tennis Center.
