SAN ANTONIO — Senior Jessica Rogers had four hits, but Jennifer Corkin went 4-for-8 with five RBIs, including both game-winners, to help lead Texas Tech to a doubleheader sweep of UTSA, 5-4 and 6-3, on Friday at Roadrunner Field.
The Roadrunners fall to 13-16 on the season with their third consecutive home loss, while the Red Raiders improve to 17-13.
Corkin led a Tech offense that recorded 23 hits on the afternoon, going 2-for-4 with two RBIs in game one and turning in a 2-for-4, 3-RBI performance in game two. The Red Raiders rallied from a 3-0 deficit in game one and broke a 3-3 tie in the nightcap behind Corkin’s fifth home run of the season.
Rogers, senior Aimee Murray and freshmen Rudi Cantu and Krista Sitka all collected two hits apiece in the opener as the Roadrunners pounded out 12 hits off Tech starter Ashly Jacobs.
Robyn Wike led Texas Tech with three hits, while Corkin and Montana Patin had two hits and two RBIs.
UTSA jumped on the board with three runs on five hits in the first. Cantu singled through the left side, advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by junior Kourtney Jones and scored on a double to right field by Rogers. Back-to-back singles by Murray and Sitka brought Rogers home, while sophomore Leanne Risberg plated the third run on a single up the middle.
The Red Raiders got on the board with a pair of runs in the fifth. Wike singled to center and pinch runner Megan Shupp moved to second on a groundout. Ashley Parker singled to left and Patin drove in both runners on a single to right center.
Texas Tech took the lead with three runs in the seventh. Again, Wike started the frame with a base hit to center and pinch hitter Whitney Riley singled to left center to put runners at first and second with no outs. Ashley Parker doubled off the fence in left center to score pinch runner Natalie Kula, however Riley was gunned at the plate on a relay throw from the shortstop Murray. Devin Zaragoza kept the rally alive with an infield single and both runners came home on a clutch hit to right center by Corkin.
UTSA mounted a rally in the bottom of the seventh, as Jones singled and Murray walked. With two outs, Sitka lined a double down the right field line that scored Jones, but the relay throw from the second baseman to home was in time to catch Murray with the final out.
Jacobs allowed four runs but recorded six strikeouts in the win, running her record to 13-7. Junior Amanda Nikolenko (8-10) gave up four runs on nine hits in the loss.
Rogers led UTSA in the nightcap with two hits, while Risberg drilled her third home run of the season, a three-run blast in the fourth.
The Red Raiders took the early lead in game two with two runs in the top of the second. Corkin singled and following a single by Brandy Moulin, pinch runner Liz Eimen scored on a Jennifer Bowers base hit to right center. Moulin came home on a fielder’s choice off the bat of Whitney Riley.
Tech added a run in the third on an RBI-groundout by Corkin that pushed home Ashley Parker, who led off the frame with a bunt single.
The Roadrunners knotted the score in the fourth. Rogers doubled to left center and Sitka walked with two outs, setting the table for Risberg’s three-run shot over the scoreboard in left field.
The Red Raiders quickly answered on Corkin’s two-run home run to right that proved to be the difference. Riley added an RBI-single later in the inning to increase the margin to 6-3.
Sarah Losleben (4-5) picked up the win, recording seven strikeouts and allowing three runs on five hits. Junior Janeille Nickels gave up six runs on 10 hits in falling to 5-6.
