HAMMOND, La. — Senior Jessica Rogers went 3-for-3 with four RBIs to lead the UTSA softball team to an 11-2 rout of Southeastern Louisiana on Sunday afternoon at North Oak Park.
The win completes a three-game series sweep of the Lions and moves the Roadrunners to 13-13 overall and 7-2 in the Southland Conference. UTSA now has won 13 straight games against Southeastern Louisiana and leads the all-time series, 23-9. SLU falls to 14-12 and 3-5.
Rogers’ day included her sixth home run of the season, one of two on the day for UTSA as senior Aimee Murray, who was 2-for-4, hit her fifth of the year. The Roadrunners pounded out 15 hits on the afternoon and finished the weekend with 30 hits off Lions pitching. Juniors Kim Chavez and Kourtney Jones and freshmen Rudi Cantu and Kelly Cato all collected two hits apiece.
Junior Amanda Nikolenko ran her record to 8-9 with a solid outing. She struck out two and allowed just two runs on three hits in picking up her second win of the weekend and fifth in SLC play. Rachel Ray allowed five runs on nine hits in falling to 7-4.
UTSA jumped on the board in the top of the first on a two-run blast to left field by Rogers that scored Jones, who singled. It was the 57th career long ball for Rogers as she adds to her SLC record total.
The Roadrunners added two in the third on a two-run double to center by Cato that plated Rogers and Murray, who led off the frame with back-to-back singles.
A sacrifice fly by Rogers made it 5-0 in the top of the fourth. Singles by Chavez, Cantu and Jones loaded the bases for Rogers, who lined out to left to pick up her third RBI of the game.
The Lions finally got on the board in the bottom of the fourth on a two-run home run by Arica Rodriguez that scored Heather Sherrill, who walked.
UTSA broke the game open in the fifth, plating six runs on six hits and an error. Chavez had a two-RBI single, Jones had a sacrifice fly, Rogers drove in her fourth run with a single and Murray provided the final blow, a two-run blast to left center.
Nikolenko worked a perfect fifth to put the mercy rule in effect.
