Brooks races to school record at Iowa State NCAA Qualifier

Senior Larry Brooks set UTSA's indoor 800 meter record on Saturday.

AMES, Iowa — Senior Larry Brooks raced to his second school record in as many years at Saturday’s Iowa State NCAA Qualifier and improved his previous NCAA provisional time by nearly a full second in the process.

Brooks raced to a provisional 1:48.72 and finished fifth in the 800 meters. It was a year ago that the Stafford native sped to a 1:49.42 in setting the UTSA record at the Lied Recreation-Athletic Facility. His previous season best was a 1:49.62, which he set on Jan. 27 at the Washington Invitational.

Brooks, who entered Saturday’s race ranked 19th in the nation, now will wait on an invitation to next weekend’s NCAA Indoor Championships. The national meet is scheduled for March 9-10 at the Randal Tyson Track Center.

Two Roadrunners — junior Will Vese and sophomore Gaston Griffin — competed on Friday night at the Arkansas Last Chance Qualifier.

Vese won the 60-meter hurdles in an NCAA provisional time of 7.90, while Griffin placed third in his heat of the 400 meters in 47.43 (fifth overall). Both were unable to improve their previous season bests.
