Three Roadrunners to compete at pair of last chance meets this weekend

SAN ANTONIO – Three UTSA men’s track & field athletes will attempt to improve their standings on the national leaderboard this weekend when they compete in a pair of last chance meets.

Junior Will Vese (60-meter hurdles) and sophomore Gaston Griffin (400 meters), both of whom captured Southland Conference titles two weeks ago, will compete at Friday’s Arkansas Last Chance Qualifier in Fayetteville.

Vese ranks 24th in the nation with his NCAA provisional time of 7.85 set at the season-opening Arkansas Invitational and the Houston native has recorded a total of three provisional marks during the 2007 campaign. Griffin, meanwhile, has not earned a national qualifying time this season, but he just missed a provisional mark by three one-hundredths of a second on Jan. 26 when he sped to a 47.28 in winning the Northern Arizona Team Challenge.

On Saturday, senior Larry Brooks will attempt to improve his NCAA provisional time in the 800 meters at the Iowa State NCAA Qualifier. Brooks, this year’s SLC Indoor Champion, enters the meet in 19th place nationally with his time of 1:49.62 set on Jan. 27 at the Washington Invitational. Last year, the Stafford native set the school record in the 800 (1:49.42) at this meet.

The NCAA Indoor Championships are scheduled for March 9-10 at the Randal Tyson Track Complex in Fayetteville, Ark.
