Vese collects third provisional time of season at Houston Classic

· Final results

HOUSTON — Junior Will Vese's third NCAA provisional time of the season highlighted UTSA's final meet before the 2007 Southland Conference Indoor Championships on Saturday at the Houston Classic.

Running in his hometown for the second time in three weeks, Vese finished second in the 60-meter hurdles championship race in 7.87, just one-hundreth of a second behind winner Lewis Edmondson (unattached). He qualified for the final by posting the fastest preliminary time (8.01).

Freshman Bryan Ugochukwu won the 800 meters in 1:56.83, besting 48 other competitors and missing his career-best time by only four-tenths of a second.

"I thought we had a great meet," head coach Aaron Fox said. "We accomplished what we wanted to and I thought the guys competed well. We'll now take next weekend off before heading back to Houston to defend our title in two weeks."

Junior Steven Brown tied his personal best in the 60 meters (6.87) in winning his preliminary heat and he went on to match that performance in the final. The 1,600-meter relay team of sophomore Gaston Griffin, junior Dominic Brown, senior Larry Brooks and senior Scott Briscoe raced to a season-best 3:17.96.

In the field, junior Luke Johnson finished fifth in the shot put with a personal-best 16.60 meters (54-5 1/2). Freshman Alton St. Rose, who has broken UTSA's school record in the triple jump twice this season, skipped to a fifth-place showing (14.13m/46-4 1/4).

UTSA returns to Houston in two weeks to begin the defense of its league championship on Friday, Feb. 16. The two-day meet will take place at the site of today's meet, Bill Yoeman Field House.
