SAN ANTONIO – The UTSA men’s tennis team split a pair of matches at the UTSA Tennis Center on Saturday. The Roadrunners (2-3) rebounded with a 5-2 victory against St. Edward's after dropping 4-3 decision to Laredo Community College in their 2007 home opener.
UTSA collected the doubles point against St. Edward's by winning at the No. 1 and 2 spots. Junior Adam Becker and sophomore Robin Fernandes defeated Tyler Lyon and Jacob Walley, 8-5, at the top spot. Freshmen Rodrigo Morgado and Nenad Maric teamed up to down Walter Valarezo and Boris Barrios, 8-6.
The Roadrunners went on to clinch the match by winning four of the six singles matchups. Fernandes got past Lyon in straight sets (6-3, 6-4) at the No. 2 spot, while Maric defeated Barrios in three sets (4-6, 6-4, 6-3) at No. 3. Sophomore Andre Moreira (6-2, 6-1) and senior Nate Avila (6-0, 6-2) rolled to victories in their matches at the No. 5 and 6 positions, respectively. St. Edward's picked up wins at the No. 1 and 4 spots, as Valarezo swept Morgado (6-2, 6-4) and Walley got past Becker in straight sets (7-6, 6-3).
Earlier in the day, UTSA dropped its 2007 home opener to Laredo Community College.
The Roadrunners picked up the early advantage, sweeping all three doubles matches for a 1-0 lead. Becker and Maric teamed up for an 8-4 victory at the No. 1 spot against Jose Arizpe and Laurent Croize. Meanwhile, Fernandes and Morgado picked up a hard-fought 8-5 victory against Gwen Corches and Azubiel Maxat at No. 2 to clinch the point. In the other doubles match, Moreira and Avila cruised past Diego Troiana and Francisco Segura, 8-2.
The Palominos rebounded to take a 3-1 lead after picking up wins at No. 3, 4 and 6 singles. Corches defeated Maric (6-0, 6-3) at the No. 3 spot, while Max swept Becker (6-3, 6-1) at No. 4. Troiana picked up a walkover victory against Moreira at the No. 6 position.
Avila pulled UTSA within one at 3-2 when he defeated Segura in straight sets (7-5, 6-3) at No. 5, but Arizpe beat Morgado (7-6, 6-4) at No. 1 to clinch the victory for Laredo. Fernandes pulled out the final singles match, winning in three sets (4-6, 6-2, 6-2) against Croize.
UTSA is back in action in two weeks when it travels to Las Cruces, N.M. for three matches. The Roadrunners will play Northern Colorado at 3 p.m. (CT) on Friday, Feb. 16, Northern Arizona at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 17, and New Mexico State at 10 a.m. on Sunday, Feb. 18.
