UTSA wins back-to-back thrillers on Saturday

SAN ANTONIO
– The UTSA women’s tennis team won a pair of 4-3 thrillers at UTEP and at New Mexico State on Saturday. UTSA improved to 4-2 on the season, while UTEP fell to 6-6 and New Mexico State dropped to 5-6 on the season.

In their match at New Mexico State, the Roadrunners got past the Aggies after they struck first by winning the doubles points.

UTSA fought back by taking four of the six matches in singles action. After dropping the No. 1 and No. 6 matches, the Roadrunners picked up victories at the No. 2 through No. 5 positions to win the match. Sophomore Monika Drabkova won a tough three-set match at the No. 5 slot against Estelle Guillaumond. Drabkova dropped the first set 6-1 but rebounded to win the second set 6-1. In the final set, the Prague, Czech Republic, native was down 3-1, but stormed back to win the next five sets to clinched the match for UTSA.

Earlier in the day, UTSA defeated UTEP, 4-3, in El Paso. The Roadrunners won the doubles point to take a 1-0 lead.

UTSA then jumped to a 3-1 lead when sophomore Sandra Kukla and junior Tanya Hasking collected wins at the No. 2 and No. 4 singles positions. However, the Miners tied the match at three with victories at the No. 1, No. 5 and No. 6 spots. Sophomore Karen Scida clinched the match for the Roadrunners with three-set win against Marina Deluca at No. 3. Scida won the first set, 6-3, but lost the second set, 6-2. With the match tied at one set apiece, Scida easily won the third set by a score of 6-2.

UTSA returns to action tomorrow morning against Montana State in El Paso.
