Ewalefo, Gibbs lead UTSA past Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, 61-43

– Senior Vivian Ewalefo and sophomore Monica Gibbs posted double-doubles to lead the UTSA women’s basketball team to an easy 61-43 win against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Saturday night. The game was played in front of 1,655 fans, the largest crowd on the season at the Convocation Center.

Ewalefo posted her sixth double-double of the season with a game-high 23 points and 11 rebounds to lead three Roadrunners (11-15, 7-7 SLC) in double figures. Gibbs recorded her 10th double-double with 13 points and 11 boards and dished out game-best eight assists. Sophomore Tia Bogan chipped in with 10 points and grabbed five rebounds.

Jenesis Shaw paced the Islanders (13-14, 8-6 SLC) with a team-high 12 points, while Jillianne Duffey grabbed a game-high 13 rebounds.

The Roadrunners’ defense held the Islanders to 29 percent shooting on the night, including 25 percent in the second half. UTSA also held the Islanders to 2-of-15 (14 percent) from beyond the arc. The Roadrunners exploded to their largest lead of the game (18 points/53-31) when they went on a 17-6 run with 11:37 remaining in the game.

Nicole Duncan pulled the Islanders within 17 points at 60-43 when she connected on a 3-pointer, but the Roadrunners were too strong in the second frame en route to the 18-point victory.

Texas A&M-Corpus Christi grabbed its first and only lead on the night at 7-6 when Duncan was good on a jumper with 15:34 to go in the first half. UTSA responded with a 15-4 run over the next 5:31 to take the lead for good at 21-11. The Islanders pulled within five (21-16) on a pair of free throws by Shaye Montgomery with 8:27 remaining in the frame, but UTSA used a 14-6 run and took a 35-22 lead into the locker room.

UTSA is back in action on Thursday, March 1, when it travels to Sam Houston State for a 7 p.m. contest.
