SAN ANTONIO – The UTSA men’s tennis team handed Southeastern Louisiana a 4-3 loss in its Southland Conference opener on Saturday afternoon at the UTSA Tennis Center. The Roadrunners – who now have won three consecutive matches – improved to 5-4 on the season, while the Lions saw their record fall to 3-2.
Southeastern Louisiana began the day by winning at No. 1 and 2 doubles to take the early 1-0 lead. However, UTSA fought back by winning four of the six singles matches.
Junior Adam Becker got things started for the Roadrunners, winning in straight sets at the No. 6 slot against Jakub Kwasniewicz. Sophomore Robin Fernandes and freshman Rodrigo Morgado then gave UTSA a 3-1 lead. Fernandes defeated Mattieu Leboucher, 6-4, 6-2, at the No. 1 slot, while Morgado cruised past Julien Lousao in straight sets at the No. 2 position.
SLU pulled within one when Vladmir Paunic handed sophomore Andre Moreira a 6-2, 6-4 loss at No. 4, but freshman Nenad Maric clinched the match with a tough three-set win against Ondrej Krivka at the No. 3 position.
UTSA returns to action on Sunday with an 11 a.m. home match against Nicholls State.
