SAN ANTONIO — UTSA freshman Simon Merry fired rounds of 69 and 71 (140) in his collegiate debut on Monday and is tied for first place in the individual standings at the UTSA Intercollegiate.
UTSA “B” stands in fourth place, just seven strokes behind co-leaders New Orleans and Louisiana-Monroe (588). Junior Phillip Krohn carded a 77 in the first round but rebounded in the second round with 72 to tie for 18th-place. Junior Sean Burch is tied for 34th with a 75-77=154 showing, while freshman Emiliano Martinez is two strokes behind Burch at 154 (78-76). Also in action was freshman Phillip Hui, who shot a 80-78=158 on the day, which put him in a 66th-place tie after day one.
Senior Matt Johnston, who is in sixth place (73-73=146), helped lead UTSA's “A” squad to a seventh-place showing. Junior Thomas Kearny finished the day tied for 18th place with a 76-73=149, while sophomore Kyle Collins is tied for 27th (76-74=150). Senior Kitt Thabungkan (78-77=155) and junior Nick Olivarri (82-75=157) stand in 52nd and 64th place, respectively.
The third and final round of the tournament will be played tomorrow morning at Oak Hills Country Club.
