HOUSTON – Freshman Teddy Williams’ NCAA provisional qualifying mark and second school record of the season in 60 meters semifinals and sophomore Carvey Evans’ second-place finish in the high jump highlighted UTSA’s first day of action at the Southland Conference Indoor Championships on Friday at Bill Yeoman Field House.
The defending champion Roadrunners finished the day in fourth place with 29.5 points and trail only Stephen F. Austin (46.5), Texas-Arlington (38) and Southeastern Louisiana (30) heading into Saturday’s final day of action.
Williams, who previously set the school record on Jan. 26 (6.74), blazed the straight away in 6.71, four one-hundredths of a second faster than his nearest competitor, and he will lead three Roadrunners into tomorrow’s final.
Evans, who cleared a career-best 6-9 ½/2.07m, was one of three UTSA high jumpers to score in the event on Friday. Freshman Johnathan Whittaker also leaped a personal-best 6-9 ½ but finished third because he was successful in his attempt in two tries. First-place finisher Justin Reyes (Stephen F. Austin) and Evans both cleared the height in their first try. Reyes cleared the previous height (2.02m) in his only attempt and won the league championship because Evans took two tries. Freshman Marcus Bibles recorded a fifth-place showing (6-7 ½/2.02), as the Roadrunners scored 17.5 points in the event.
The long jump saw two UTSA athletes – junior Steven Brown (22-11 ¾/7.00m) and freshman Mo Jackson (21-7 ½/6.59m) – combine to score five points. Brown finished in fifth place, while Jackson registered an eighth-place performance.
The Roadrunners’ other points of the day came from their fourth-place distance medley relay team (10:15.20/No. 3 in UTSA history) and junior Luke Johnson’s seventh-place effort in the weight throw (53-5 ½/16.29m).
Sophomore Tommy Wolfe scored 2,832 points in the first four events of the heptathlon and he enters Saturday in second place, 132 points behind leader Jon Fagan of McNeese State. Wolfe's score was bulit on the strength of the top high jump (6-2 ¼/1.89m) and shot put (44-7/13.59m) marks in the competition.
Sophomore Gaston Griffin recorded the fastest 400-meter preliminary time (48.02) and both he and junior Dominic Brown will represent UTSA in Saturday’s final.
In the 800 meters, senior Larry Brooks (1:54.23) posted the fastest qualifying time of the day and freshman Bryan Ugochukwu ran a personal-best 1:56.36. The pair will lead five Roadrunners into tomorrow’s final.
Junior Will Vese continued his dominance in the 60-meter hurdles, easily advancing to Saturday’s final with a preliminary time 7.97. The Houston native was the only competitor to finish in less than eight seconds.
All told, 15 Roadrunners advanced to Saturday’s running finals.
The two-day meet concludes tomorrow with field events getting underway at 11 a.m. and running finals at 1:30 p.m.
