SAN ANTONIO — Sophomore Monica Gibbs’ third straight 20-point performance was not enough, as the UTSA women’s basketball team dropped a 68-52 decision against undefeated West Division leader Texas-Arlington on Thursday night at the Convocation Center.
Gibbs led the Roadrunners (9-14, 5-6 SLC) with a game-high 22 points and six rebounds. Senior Vivian Ewalefo added 13 points and freshman Lynsey Freeman dished out three assists.
Tiffeny Riles (16 points, game-high 20 rebounds) and Ashley Bobb (19, 12) both had double-doubles for the Mavericks (17-8, 12-0 SLC). Terra Wallace added 19 points and eight boards.
After Wallace started the second half with a jumper to extend UTA's lead to 31-23, Ewalefo scored six straight points and junior Terrie Davis made a layup to pull the Roadrunners within two at 33-31. However, it would be the closet UTSA would get the rest of the night, as the Mavericks went on a 21-7 run over the next 8:47 to extend the lead to 54-38 and put the game out of reach.
The first half saw seven ties and five lead changes. After UTSA jumped to an early 7-4 lead, Bobb was good on a 3-pointer from the top of the key with 13:30 remaining to give UTA its first lead of the night at 9-7. The Roadrunners regained the advantage on a pair of free throws by freshman Courtney Laing with less than three minutes to go in the half, but the Mavericks went on a 6-0 run and took a 29-23 lead into the locker room.
UTSA hits the road this weekend when it travels to San Marcos to face I-35 rival Texas State on Saturday afternoon. Tip-off is scheduled for 2 p.m. at Strahan Coliseum.
