Baker, Martinez lead UTSA to third-place finish at Baja Invitational

ENSENADA, Mexico — Sophomore Laura Baker and freshman Shelly Martinez each recorded top-10 finishes and led the UTSA women’s golf team to a third-place showing at the season-opening Baja Invitational in Ensenada, Mexico, on Tuesday.

The Roadrunners capped off the tournament by shooting 324-322-327-973, finishing one stroke behind second-place Eastern Michigan.

Baker shot an 83 in the first round, but she regrouped with a 79 in the second and third rounds for a final score of 241. Meanwhile, Martinez was solid, firing rounds of 82-78-81-241.

Junior Lesan Gouge end the day tied for 20th with a 79-83-82-244, while sophomore Allie Jordan carded rounds of 80-86-85-251 for a 28th-place finish.

UTSA is back in action on Feb. 26-27 at the Islander Spring Classic.
