UTSA collects 66-60 victory at Nicholls State on Saturday

THIBODAUX, La. – Led by sophomore Monica Gibbs' game-high 22 points and senior Vivian Ewalefo's fifth double-double of the season, the UTSA women’s basketball team collected a hard-fought 66-60 victory on Saturday afternoon at Stopher Gymnasium.

Gibbs, who led the team in scoring for the third game in a row, added nine rebounds and five assists, while Ewalefo scored 16 points and grabbed a game-high 10 boards. Freshman Lynsey Freeman chipped in with 14 points, hitting 4-of-6 3-pointers for the Roadrunners.

UTSA started the game strong, jumping out to a 27-11 lead midway through the first half. with Freeman leading the way with nine points on 3-of-3 shooting from downtown. Nicholls State cut the lead to two at 35-33 with the help of a 20-5 run, but UTSA ended the half on a 6-2 run and headed into the locker room with a 41-35 edge.

Jamie Octave’s jumper midway through the second half trimmed the deficit to two (52-50) with 12:30 remianing, but the Roadrunners responded with a 14-10 run to close out the game and held on for the six-point victory.
Katherine Plummer and Claire Barry led the Lady Colonels (5-17, 3-8 SLC) with 20 points apiece, while Octave grabbed seven rebounds.

UTSA returns home to host SLC West Division leader Texas-Arlington at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 15, at the Convocation Center.
