SAN ANTONIO – The UTSA women’s tennis opened its 2007 home campaign in winning fashion, rallying from an early 1-0 deficit and winning all six singles matches en route to a 6-1 victory against Texas-Pan American on Saturday at the UTSA Tennis Center. The Roadrunners improved to 2-2 on the season, while UTPA dropped to 2-7.
The Lady Broncs picked up the early advantage, winning the No. 1 and 2 doubles matches. Giana Oliveira and Julia Cirne-Lima rolled to a convincing 8-1 victory at the No. 1 spot against junior Tanya Hasking and sophomore Karen Scida. Stephani Willerding and Nicole Garcia got past freshman Holly Phillips and sophomore Monica Drabkova, 8-6, at the No. 2 position to clinch the doubles point for UTPA. The Roadrunners' lone victory came when sophomore Nathalie Wallin and sophomore Sandra Kukla defeated Megan Bedeau and Silke Buksik, 8-4.
UTSA turned the tables in the six singles matches, winning five in straight sets. Wallin cruised to a 6-4, 6-0 victory at the No. 1 spot, while sophomore Karen Scida rolled to a 6-2, 6-3 triumph against Willerding at No. 3. Hasking picked up a 6-0, 6-3 win against Bedeau at the No. 4 position and Drabkova collected an easy 6-1, 6-2 victory against Buksik at No. 5. Sophomore Eva Silvester also was victorious in two sets, defeating Garcia, 6-3, 6-3.
However, the day’s most exciting match came at the No. 2 spot, as Kukla outlasted Cirne Lima in three sets [7-6 (7-5), 6-7 (6-8), 10-8] in a contest that took nearly three hours to complete.
The Roadrunners will take next weekend off before returning to action on Friday, Feb. 23, when they travel to El Paso to play UTEP.
