SAN ANTONIO — Sophomore Monica Gibbs’ sixth double-double on the year led UTSA to a 75-60 win against Sam Houston State on Thursday night at the Convocation Center. The Roadrunners snapped a three-game losing streak and improved to 7-12 overall and 3-4 in league play.
Gibbs, who recorded her ninth career double-double, had 18 points and 12 rebounds. Senior Vivian Ewalefo led four Roadrunners in double figures with a game-high 20 points, 16 of which came in the first half. Freshman Lynsey Freeman and junior Terrie Davis added 16 and 10 points, respectively.
Sam Houston State (4-17, 1-7 SLC) was led by Adah Wells’ 14 points, while Bo Warm added 11 on 5-of-6 shooting.
UTSA grabbed an early 18-10 lead with 11:51 to go in the first half, as Ewalefo poured in 12 points, including 10 in a row at one point. The Roadrunners pushed their lead to 15 (29-14) after an 11-4 run and entered intermission with a 33-18 lead.
Sam Houston State opened the second half with an 11-0 run to cut UTSA’s lead to nine (40-31) with 15 minutes to play. The Roadrunners, led by Davis' eight points, responded with 16-6 run with 9:22 remaining in the game to go back in front by double digits. Erica Parker’s layup with 2:59 remaining pulled the Lady Bearkats within 12 at 68-56, but the Roadrunners sealed the win with a 7-4 run in the final two minutes.
UTSA hits the road on Saturday when it travels to Stephen F. Austin for a 6 p.m. tilt at William R. Johnson Coliseum.
