FRISCO – UTSA sophomore guard Monica Gibbs collected her first career Aeropostale/Southland Conference Player of the Week honor, the league office announced on Monday. Gibbs, who averaged a double-double in two Roadrunners wins last week, is the first player to earn the league's weekly honor since Katie Sandefur on Jan. 23, 2006.
Gibbs averaged 17.0 points and 10.0 rebounds per game to go along with 4.0 assists and 3.0 steals per contest as UTSA defeated Sam Houston State, 75-60, on Thursday and Stephen F. Austin, 61-55, two days later. The win at SFA was the program's first in school history at Johnson Coliseum.
The 2005-06 SLC Freshman of the Year posted her sixth double-double of the season with 18 points and 12 rebounds against the Bearkats, as she made a career-high 10 free throws in the game. She then added 16 points, eight rebounds, five assists and four steals against the Ladyjacks.
Gibbs is averaging 11.4 points and 7.3 rebounds per game this season.
UTSA hits the road this week for a two-game road swing in Louisiana that begins on Thursday, Feb. 8, at Southeastern Louisiana. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
