UTSA Athletic Medicine Overview
The UTSA training staff works under the direction of Assistant Athletics Director for Athletic Medicine Jerry Greeson.

All of the physicians that work with the training staff come from the University of Texas Health Science Center Medical School and those physicians, along with selected non-physicians, compose the sports medicine team for UTSA.

The training staff is responsible for the care, prevention and rehabilitation of athletic injuries, taping and wrapping procedures, emergency situations should they occur, attendance of practices and home and away events that occur to 16 intercollegiate sports. UTSA student-athletes receive care from a centralized training center which has state-of-the-art therapeutic modalities and rehabilitation equipment to give student-athletes the best care available.

UTSA is also the host institution for numerous NCAA-sanctioned events including the NCAA Men's and Women's Basketball Championships, NCAA Final Four and University Interscholastic League (UIL) athletic activities. UTSA student trainers also have the opportunity to work with other athletic related activities including professional hockey, professional baseball, professional rodeo, high school football and exposure in sports medicine rehabilitation clinics.

Student trainers that have graduated from the program have gone on to work in high schools, pursue graduate assistantships, college/universities, private clinics and professional teams.

Athletic Training Education
The student training program at UTSA is an internship/apprenticeship program which adheres to the policies and procedures of the National Athletic Trainers Association (NATA) and the state of Texas. The program prepares students for a professional career in the sports medicine field through hands-on experience, academic enhancement and athletic training education.

Through this program, student trainers are given ample opportunity to pass the state of Texas licensure exam and be ready for the application process into a graduate education program. Below is the requirements of the Athletic Training Education Program. The requirements for state licensure can be found here.

Athletic Training Program Starting In Fall 2016
The student athletic training program will begin a new phase starting in Fall 2016. The program no longer will be accepting freshman applicants. It now will be a three-year program after students fulfill the first-year requirements. For junior college transfers, it will be a two-year program (six semesters, including summers).

The program is set up to allow for incoming freshman to acquire the prerequisite courses and observation hours in addition to allowing them to adjust to their first year in college.

This requires a student to begin developing appropriate time management and study strategies that will allow them to be successful in the following years of the program.

The program is set up for those pursuing an athletic medicine major within the kinesiology department, ONLY. The requirements are stated below for those interested in applying to the program. The observation hours requirement must be completed prior to the application process. To set up observation hours, please contact wesley.moss@utsa.edu.

Requirements to Apply to the Program
· Must declare as an athletic medicine major within UTSA’s kinesiology department
· Minimum GPA of 2.25
· Observation hours (50 total/junior college transfers 25 minimum)
    · 25 hours per semester
    · Two (2) hours per day maximum
    · Two (2) game day events per semester (each count as two [2] hours)
· Completion of “observer checklist”
· Student organization involvement & Sports Medicine Society membership

Once all requirements are met, an application packet will be given to a candidate to fill out. Each year, interviews will be conducted and a class of student athletic trainers will be chosen.
