Lamar hands Roadrunners 60-46 defeat in SLC opener

BEAUMONT – Lamar handed the UTSA women’s basketball team a 60-46 loss in both team's Southland Conference opener on Saturday night at the Montagne Center.

The Roadrunners dropped to 5-8 overall and 0-1 in SLC play, while the Cardinals improved to 6-8 (1-0).

Junior Terrie Davis led UTSA with 13 points, while senior Vivian Ewalefo grabbed a career-high 19 rebounds. Sophomore Tia Bogan chipped in with 12 points.

Alexis Timpone led Lamar with 16 points, while Brittney Williams scored 13. LaToya Carson hauled in a team-high nine rebounds.

Lamar grabbed an early 10-7 lead when Timpone nailed 3-pointer with 12:30 to go in the first half. UTSA pulled within four points at 15-11 on a jumper by freshman Lynsey Freeman with 8:46 remaining. The Lady Cardinals outscored the Roadrunners 12-6 the next eight minutes and took a 27-17 lead into the locker room.

The Lady Cardinals opened the second half with 12-8 run to extend the lead to 14 with 11:41 to go. Senior Dionne Pounds connected on a 3-pointer and a pair of free throws increased the Lamar advantage to 44-25.

Davis’ 3-pointer ended UTSA’s seven-minute drought to make the score 45-28. The Roadrunners used a 14-7 run to trim the Lady Cardinals' lead to 12 points at 54-42 with 1:47 remaining, but Lamar responded with two jumpers and hit its free throws late to post the 60-46 win.

UTSA returns home on Thursday, Jan. 11, when it hosts Central Arkansas at 7 p.m. at the Convocation Center.
