SAN ANTONIO - UTSA looks to rebound from a 71-69 loss at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, when they host Sam Houston State this Thursday night (7 p.m.) at the Convocation Center.
Series meeting: UTSA leads the all-time series, 24-13, against Sam Houston State. The Roadrunners are 13-6 at the Convocation Center versus the Lady Bearkats and have won the last 10 meetings, including five straight home games.
About Sam Houston State: The Lady Bearkats visit San Antonio with a 4-16 overall record and 1-6 mark in Southland Conference play. Sam Houston State has lost six of seven league games, including four straight contests. Their lone SLC win came at McNeese State on Jan. 11. Last Saturday, Texas State downed Sam Houston State, 67-60, in San Marcos. Sophomore Lydia Gonzales leads the team in scoring with 9.5 points and 5.5 rebounds per game. Senior Erica Parker’s 4.7 boards per game is second the squad.
Last time out: Kribria Lewis’ game-winning jumper with one second remaining gave Texas A&M-Corpus Christi a 71-69 win against UTSA at the American Bank Center on Saturday. Junior Terrie Davis, who scored a team-high 21 points, recorded a career-high eight steals, seven of which came in the first half. Sophomore Tia Bogan tied her career-best with 17 points and sophomore Monica Gibbs collected her fifth double-double of the season with 14 points and 11 rebounds.
Scoring sensation: Senior Vivian Ewalefo is averaging a career-best 15.7 points per game. The Las Vegas native has scored double figures in 15 games and she started the year with six straight double-digit performance.
Second half surge: UTSA closed out the first half shooting 35 percent from the field at TAMU-CC. In the second frame, the Roadrunners came out firing connecting on 15-of-25 for 60%. Sophomore Tia Bogan led the way scoring 10 of her 17 points in the second half on 5-of-7 shooting.
Stealing the show: Junior Terrie Davis had a career-high eight steals in the game against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. Seven of her eight steals came in the first half. The Spring Woods High School product was one steal shy of tying the school record held by Rhonda Hoffman set against Sam Houston State on Jan. 27, 1984. Davis set a school record with her eight steals in a conference game.
Climbing the charts: Junior Terrie Davis has moved into fourth place on UTSA’s chart with 93 career 3-pointers and is two shy of surpassing Roise Smith for third. The Houston, Texas, sharpshooter is on pace to move into second place by end of the season and surpass last season’s total of 39 3-pointers. Davis is the fourth UTSA player to connect on 90 or more 3-pointers.
Playing all the way: With a short bench this season, UTSA’s starters are averaging 32.4 minutes per game, while in SLC play they are playing 33.6 minutes. Four of the five starters are averaging over 30 minutes per contest. In 10 of the 18 games played this season, at least one player has played the entire game. Junior Terrie Davis has played the whole game five times, while sophomore Monica Gibbs and freshman Lynsey Freeman have played in four complete contests.
Double-double tandem: Senior Vivian Ewalefo and sophomore Monica Gibbs have combined for nine double-doubles this season. Gibbs posted her team leading fifth double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. Gibbs collected two double-doubles during the Wells Fargo New Year’s Classic. The Stillwater, Okla., native posted her first one against Eastern Washington with 20 points and 14 rebounds. At UALR, Gibbs had her second double-double of the year with 15 points and 11 rebounds. In just two seasons at UTSA, Gibbs has already recorded eight career double-doubles.
Ewalefo has recorded four double-doubles on the year, giving her 11 for her career. The Las Vegas native posted her first double-double against Eastern Washington with 14 points and 10 rebounds on Nov. 24. Ewalefo collected her second and third double-double in the month of December. Against Texas-Arlington, she added her fourth with 19 points and 10 rebounds.
Freebies: UTSA tops the Southland Conference with a 73% free throw percentage. Against Texas State, UTSA connected on 18-of-20 free throws for a season-high 90%. The Roadrunners are on pace to break the school record of 71.5% set during the 1989-90 season.
Rebounding machine: Senior Vivian Ewalefo set a career-high with 19 rebounds at Lamar on Jan. 6. The Las Vegas, Nev., native collected 11 boards in the first half alone. Her 8.2 rebounds per game this season rank second in the Southland Conference.
Reaching a milestone: Head coach Rae Rippetoe-Blair added another milestone to her coaching career, as she recorded her 100th UTSA victory on Nov. 24 against EWU.
UTSA inks four for the 2007-08 season: UTSA coach Rae Rippetoe-Blair announced the signing of Amber Gregg (Austin, Texas/McNeil HS), Cierra Martin (Pflugerville, Texas/Pflugerville HS), Magdalena Pawlaczyk (Wroclaw, Poland/Casper College) and Jordan Stark (Weatherford, Okla./Weatherford HS) to National Letters of Intent for the 2007-08 season.
