Roadrunners fall at the buzzer, 71-69

CORPUS CHRISTI — Kribria Lewis’ game-winning fade-away jumper with one second remaining gave Texas A&M-Corpus Christi a 71-69 win against UTSA on Saturday afternoon at the American Bank Center. The Roadrunners dropped their third game in a row and fell to 6-12 overall and 2-4 in SLC play.

Junior Terrie Davis, who scored a team-high 21 points, recorded a career-high eight steals, seven of which came in the first half. Sophomore Tia Bogan tied her career-best with 17 points and sophomore Monica Gibbs collected her fifth double-double of the season with 14 points and 11 rebounds.

Senior Nicole Duncan led Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (9-10, 4-2) with a game-high 24 points, while sophomore Elisa Beagle added 17 and grabbed 12 boards.

UTSA went on a 10-0 run at the 11:48 mark of the first half to grab a 22-11 lead. Gibbs led the way, scoring six points during the run, but the Islanders responded with a 10-2 run to tie the game at 26 with 7:17 remaining. Davis connected on her second 3-pointer to pull the Roadrunners with one point at 35-34, but A&M-Corpus Christi scored the next six points to take a 41-34 halftime lead.

UTSA tied the game at 50 on a jumper by Bogan with 14:18 remaining in the game, but the Islanders then went on an 8-0 run to extend its lead to 58-50. However, the Roadrunners tied the game at 63 when senior Ana Oliveira nailed a layup with 5:30 to go. A&M-Corpus Christi retook the lead, 69-65, on Beagle’s put-back layup with less than three minutes to go in the contest. Bogan tied the game for the seventh time on the day when she connected on jumper from the free-throw line with 14 seconds remaining. However, Lewis’ fade-away jumper as time expired gave the Islanders the victory.

UTSA returns to action on Thursday, Feb. 1, against Sam Houston State. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. at the Convocation Center.
