FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. — Two school records, an NCAA provisional time and seven winning performances highlighted a successful day of action by the UTSA men’s track & field team at the Northern Arizona Team Challenge on Friday.
Freshmen Teddy Williams and Alton St. Rose both rewrote the school’s record book in winning the 60 meters and triple jump, respectively. Williams raced to an NCAA provisional time of 6.74, breaking Cedric Harris’ record of 6.76 set at the 2005 Southland Conference Indoor Championships. Meanwhile, St. Rose leaped 14.57m (47-9 3/4) for his second school-record breaking performance in just three meets this season.
“This was a great meet for us,” head coach Aaron Fox said following the meet. “The freshman and upperclassmen all looked great and I think the performances speak for themselves. This is definitely something we can build on as we get closer to the conference meet.”
Sophomore Gaston Griffin led a 1-2-3 UTSA finish in the 400 meters. Griffin sped to a time of 47.28, three one-hundredths of a second shy of a provisional mark, and moved into second place on the Roadrunners’ all-time performers chart. Senior Scott Briscoe followed Griffin through the tape with a personal-best 48.58 and junior Dominic Brown placed third in 49.22.
Junior Will Vese was a double winner, as he captured the 60-meter hurdles for the second week in a row (7.94) and also won the 200 meters in a personal-best 21.76 (No. 4 on UTSA’s all-time performers list).
Other winners for the Roadrunners included junior Steven Brown in the long jump (personal-best 7.28m/23-10 3/4) and junior Luke Johnson in the shot put (personal-best 16.15m/53-0). Both marks placed them second on the school’s all-time performers chart in their respective events.
Seven distance runners will compete on Saturday afternoon at the Washington Invitational in Seattle, Wash.
