SAN ANTONIO – The UTSA women’s basketball team dropped a 76-64 decision against I-35 rival Texas State on Saturday night at the Convocation Center. The Roadrunners saw their two-game conference winning streak come to an end with the loss and fell to 6-10 overall and 2-2 in SLC play.
Senior Vivian Ewalefo led three UTSA players in double figures with a team-high 15 points. Sophomores Tia Bogan and Monica Gibbs chipped in with 12 apiece and Ewalefo grabbed a team-best seven rebounds.
Junior Brooke DeGrate paced Texas State’s offense with a game-high 19 points, while Janesha Washington and Joyce Ekworomadu added 14. Senior Erica Putman hauled in a game-high 10 boards.
After UTSA jumped out to an 9-6 lead, Texas State (12-7, 5-1) went on a 15-8 run to build a four-point lead at 21-17 with 9:57 to go in the first half. The Roadrunners regained the lead at 23-21 on a short jumper by Bogan with less than eight minutes remaining, but the Bobcats responded with late run and went into the locker room with a 38-32 lead.
UTSA built its largest lead of the second half at 54-49 following a Gibbs' free throw, but Texas State outscored the Roadrunners 17-4 over the final four minutes to seal the 12-point victory.
UTSA travels to Arlington for an SLC matchup against Texas-Arlington on Tuesday, Jan. 23. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Texas Hall.
