SAN ANTONIO – The UTSA women’s basketball team held Northwestern State to a season-low 23 percent from the floor and picked up a convincing 55-38 victory on Saturday afternoon at the Convocation Center. It was the Roadrunners' fifth win in their last six contests.
UTSA improved to 6-9 overall and 2-1 in SLC play with their second consecutive league victory, while the Northwestern State dropped its ninth game in a row and fell to 4-13 (0-4).
Senior Vivian Ewalefo scored a game-high 18 points and collected nine rebounds. Junior Terrie Davis, who added 13 points, drained a pair of 3-pointers and moved into fourth place on UTSA's all-time list (89).
The Lady Demons, who were limited to just 14 field goals, were led by Chassidy Jones’ 14 points and game-high 16 rebounds.
Northwestern State took its first lead of the game on 3-pointer by Jones with 17:14 left in the first half, but it would be the only lead of the game for the Lady Demons. UTSA used a 9-4 run to take the lead for good at 16-9. A pair of free throws by Ewalefo upped the advantage to 23-11 with 4:20 left before the half. A basket by Dorothy Knox ended a five-minute scoreless drought to pull the Lady Demons within 10 points (23-13), but UTSA used a 8-0 run to push its lead 31-13 at the half.
Northwestern State cut the deficit to 33-19 three minutes into the second half, but UTSA extended its lead to 18 with 14:19 remaining. With less than seven minutes to go, the Lady Demons pulled within 14 at 43-29, but the Roadrunners outscored Northwestern State 13-9 over the final three minutes to secure the impressive, 17-point victory.
UTSA is back in action on Thursday, Jan. 18, when it travels to Texas-Arlington for a 7 p.m. matchup at Texas Hall.
