FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. - Junior Will Vese raced to an NCAA provisional time of 7.85 — the second-fastest mark in UTSA history — and finished second in the 60-meter hurdles during Friday’s season-opening Arkansas Invitational at the Randal Tyson Track Complex.
Despite earning just one national-qualifying mark during the day-long event, UTSA athletes won seven heats on the track that will host the NCAA Championships in early March — junior Cedric Harris (60m/6.86), freshman Teddy Williams (200m/21.95), sophomore Gaston Griffin (400m/47.97), junior Eric Miller (800m/1:56.13), senior Adrian Vargas (800m/1:59.53), senior Benson Cheserek (mile/4:21.10) and Vese (60m hurdles prelims/7.97). Senior Larry Brooks, competing in the championship flight of the 800m, finished fourth in 1:53.47.
In the field, freshman Alton St. Rose skipped to a UTSA-record 14.50m for a sixth-place finish in the triple jump. Junior Luke Johnson added a fourth-place performance (15.69m) in the shot put and and junior Steven Brown leaped to a sixth-place showing (7.06m) in the long jump.
The Roadrunners are back in action on Friday, Jan. 19, when they travel to Houston for the Leonard Hilton Memorial.
