SAN ANTONIO – Freshman Courtney Laing and junior Terrie Davis recorded their first career double-doubles and led UTSA to a 66-59 victory against Central Arkansas on Thursday night at the Convocation Center. The Roadrunners picked up their first Southland Conference victory of the year (1-1) and improved to 5-9 overall.
Laing, who was 7-of-14 from the field, tied her career high with 15 points and grabbed a career-high 10 rebounds in just 19 minutes of action. Davis played all 40 minutes and added 13 points and a career-best 10 boards. Freshman Lynsey Freeman also played the entire contest and dished out a career-high seven assists.
After UTSA scored the first six points of the game, the Sugar Bears took a 16-9 lead following a 16-3 run over the next 6:17. However, the Roadrunners responded with a 12-0 run to recapture the lead at 21-16 with 7:53 remaining in the first half. Renita Dobbins jumper with 1:53 to go capped an 8-0 run that gave UCA a 29-28 advantage, but Laing's 3-pointer with 25 seconds left in the half sent UTSA into the locker room with a 31-29 lead.
Laing keyed a 10-2 run midway through the second half by scoring eight points and helped give the Roadrunners a 14-point lead (59-45), their largest of the night, with 6:35 remaining. Central Arkansas got no closer than six points the rest of the way and that was at 63-57 with just 54 seconds left in the contest.
Central Arkansas (6-9, 0-3) was led by Caronica Randle, who scored a game-high 19 points and collected a game-best 13 rebounds. Meaghen Kellybrew added 12 points for the Sugar Bears.
The Roadrunners are back in action on Saturday when they host Northwestern State at 2 p.m.
