FORT WORTH – Juniors Isaiah Allen and Melvin Smith combined for 25 points, but Kevin Langford’s double-double keyed TCU to a 63-51 victory against UTSA on Wednesday night at Daniel-Meyer Coliseum.
Allen scored 13 points and Smith added 12, his eighth straight game in double figures, to lead the Roadrunners, who fell to 4-8 on the season.
Langford posted his first double-double of the year with 15 points and 10 rebounds, both game highs, to lead the Horned Frogs (8-4), while Neil Dougherty added nine points and six boards. Ryan Wall and Keion Mitchem tacked on eight apiece as TCU overcame a 33-percent shooting performance from the field and outrebounded UTSA, 49-27, in the victory.
Trailing 25-21 at the break, UTSA cut the deficit to 28-27 on a Smith layup at the 15:28 mark. The Roadrunners were within 30-29 after sophomore Aldric Reynolds drained two free throws with 15:01 to play, but TCU answered with a 6-0 run and eventually built a 53-40 lead with just over seven minutes remaining.
The Roadrunners would not quit as junior Keith Spencer capped a 5-1 run with a jumper at the 2:54 mark to make it 55-49. Mitchem iced it with a big 3-pointer from the right wing with 1:47 to play as TCU held on from there.
The Roadrunners face Oklahoma State this Saturday in Stillwater, Okla. Tip is set for 7 p.m. at Gallagher-Iba Arena.
