Baseball inks six during early signing period

SAN ANTONIO - UTSA baseball head coach Sherman Corbett announced the signing of six student-athletes to his program on Wednesday.

The Roadrunners signed Brett Aguilar (San Antonio, Texas/Reagan HS), Tyler Carpenter (Sugar Land, Texas/Ford Bend Elkins HS), Ryan Hutson (Round Rock, Texas/Round Rock HS), John Patterson (Frisco, Texas/Grayson CC/Frisco HS), Jason Pearce (Sachse, Texas/Naaman Forest HS) and Kristopher Ruepke (Adel, Iowa/Iowa Central CC/ADM HS) during the 2006 early signing period.

“The 2006 early signing class is collectively one of the best groups of young men that we have signed during my tenure at UTSA," Corbett said. "Coach Marshall continues to assemble great groups of recruits that will improve this program. We were able to sign quality players in every area of need for next year.

"I am excited about Patterson, Pearce and Ruepke, as all three have a chance to be immediate impact pitchers. Aguilar, Carpenter and Hutson are very good athletes that bring great offensive potential to our team. I look forward to having these young men join the Roadrunner baseball program next season.”

Below is a breakdown of this year's early-signing class.

Brett Aguilar, OF (L/L, 6-2, 180)
San Antonio, Texas (Reagan HS)
Currently plays for Chans Chapman at San Antonio's Reagan High School ... a first-team all-district selection as a junior ... hit .390 with 11 doubles, three triples, three home runs, 25 RBI and nine stolen bases year ago ... struck out just 10 times in 153 plate appearances ... also went 10-3 on the mound ... helped lead team to 2006 regional semifinals ... squad won the 2005 District Championship and reached the regional quarterfinals ... a member of the San Antonio Sliders (coached by Scott Mayer) ... hit seven home runs this past summer ... joins James Keithley as former Reagan Rattlers that have signed with UTSA during the Sherman Corbett era ... son of Eddie Aguilar and Tammy Purvis.

Tyler Carpenter, C (R/R, 5-10, 180)
Sugar Land, Texas (Fort Bend Elkins HS)
Plays for his father, Rick, at Fort Bend Elkins High School ... father has coached three State Championship teams ... a two-time all-district selection ... posted a .326 batting average, .493 on-base percentage, nine doubles and 17 RBI last season ... helped lead team to 2006 District Championship and the area round of the state playoffs ... tabbed the District 20-5A Sophomore of the Year after hitting .422 with seven doubles and 11 RBIs in 2005 ... also picked off seven base runners and threw out more than 50 percent of base stealers ... made first round of cuts at Texas Rangers Area Code tryout in Waco and was invited to the Texas Scouts Association tryout at Ameriquest Field ... a member of the Columbia Angels (coached by Clay Hill) ... joins Michael Susaneck and Kelly Shearer as former Elkins Knights who have signed with UTSA during the Sherman Corbett era ... also a letterwinner in football ... son of Rick and Tammie Carpenter ... brother, Matt, currently plays baseball at TCU.

Ryan Hutson, SS (R/R, 6-2, 170)
Round Rock, Texas (Round Rock HS)
Plays for Johnny Carter at Round Rock High School ... named to the 2007 preseason All-Centex team ... a 2006 second-team all-district choice ... hit .354 with four doubles, a pair of triples, two home runs and seven stolen bases as a junior ... had a .949 fielding percentage ... a member of the Austin Slam (coached by Tommy Boggs) ... posted a .449 batting average with eight doubles, two triples, a pair of home runs and 24 stolen bases last summer ... helped lead the Slam to the semifinals of the 2006 17U Premier World Series in Joplin, Mo. ... joins Chris Lewis as former Round Rock Dragons who have signed at UTSA duirng the Sherman Corbett era ... son of Phill & Jane Hutson ... father played baseball at Texas A&M for the legendary Tom Chandler.

Plays for Dusty Hart at Grayson Community College ... selected to play in the 2006 Texas/New Mexico Junior College All-Star Game ... registered a 7-4 record with 66 strikeouts in 73 innings pitched a year ago ... had four complete games in 12 appearances ... helped team reach 2006 NJCAA Division I Region V Tournament ... defeated defending National Champion New Mexico JC in first game of the tournament with seven innings of one-hit ball ... a former member of the Dallas Mustangs (coached by Sam Carpenter) ... posted a 5-2 record with a 2.53 ERA and 97 strikeouts as a high school senior en route to all-county honors ... went a perfect 12-0 with a 1.70 ERA during 2005 summer ball ... joins Cory Horton as former Grayson Vikings who have signed at UTSA during the Sherman Corbett era ... son of Kevin & Michelle Patterson ... father played football at Howard Payne University.

Jason Pearce, P (R/R, 6-7, 185)
Sachse, Texas (Naaman Forest HS)
Plays for Heath Andrews at Naaman Forest High School in Garland, Texas ... a team captain ... posted a 2.06 ERA and 68 strikeouts in 61 innings pitched ... allowed just 35 hits ... helped team reach regional semifinals in 2006 ... a member of the Dallas Mustangs (coached by Sam Carpenter) ... recorded a 1.09 ERA and 95 punchouts in 51 innings of work this past summer ... allowed just 19 hits and 10 walks ... also has run cross country at Naaman Forest ... son of Dale & Angela Walls.

Plays for Rick Pederson at Iowa Central Community College in Fort Dodge, Iowa ... a 2006 first-team all-region and second-team all-academic selection ... had a 10-2 record and 2.92 ERA in 77 innings pitched ... also posted four complete games in 16 appearances ... selected to play in the 2006 Iowa Junior College All-Star Game ... helped team finish seventh at 2006 NJCAA Division II World Series in Millington, Tenn. ... lettered in three sports – baseball, football and wrestling – in high school ... a two-time all-district baseball choice ... placed sixth at the Iowa Wrestling State Championships ... son of Ron & Dee Ruepke.
