Big weekend on tap for Roadrunners baseball team

SAN ANTONIO - Even though the official start to the 2007 season doesn't take place until Feb. 13 at Rice, the UTSA baseball team will give fans a sneak preview of this year's squad this weekend.

The 15th annual Roadrunner Baseball Golf Scramble takes place on Friday afternoon at La Cantera's Palmer Course. There is a 1 p.m. shotgun start with lunch and dinner being served afterwards.

On Saturday evening, the annual Alumni Baseball Game will be played under the newly-installed lights at Roadrunner Field. A pregame picnic will begin at 4 p.m. with first pitch scheduled for 6 p.m.

"I am looking forward to the culmination of the fall events with the 15th Annual Roadrunner Baseball Golf Scramble followed the next day with the annual Alumni Game," head coach Sherman Corbett said. "The Golf Scramble is our major fundraising event of the year and it is always enjoyable to see those supporters of our program come together and enjoy a fun day of golf.

"For the first time, the Alumni Game will be played under the lights at Roadrunner Field and I am expecting a great turnout. It will also mark a very special occasion as we recognize Prairie Wilson and kick off the campaign for the Brian Wilson Endowed Scholarship."

Wilson, who suddenly died of a heart attack in June at the age of 33, was a two-year letterwinner at UTSA. He became the first Roadrunner to be drafted by a Major League team when he was selected in the 33rd round by the Cincinnati Reds in 1994. The Albany, Texas, native hit .301 during his career with six home runs and 70 RBIs and he was an integral part of the 1994 squad that captured the Roadrunners' first Southland Conference Championship. Wilson was survived by his wife, Prairie, and three daughters - Carson, Conor and Curry.

The Roadrunners return six pitchers, five position starters and 18 letterwinners from last year's squad that posted a 37-22 record and 20-10 mark in Southland Conference play (tied for second place).
