Softball wraps up memorable weekend

SAN ANTONIO - The UTSA Softball team wrapped up a memorable weekend that included a ring ceremony and the first-ever game under the lights at Roadrunner Field.

On Friday night, the Roadrunners were honored at halftime of the women’s soccer match in a ring presentation ceremony. All players, coaches and support staff from the 2006 team received rings commemorating their third consecutive Southland Conference (SLC) regular season title and their second SLC Tournament championship in the past three seasons. They also received NCAA participant medals for the program’s second appearance in the NCAA Tournament at the Austin Regional. UTSA Athletics Director Lynn Hickey and Associate AD/SWA Elizabeth Dalton then presented the team with plaques from the NCAA honoring UTSA for leading the nation in home runs per game for the fourth straight year and slugging percentage for the third consecutive season.

On Saturday evening, the lights were turned on for the first time at Roadrunner Field as UTSA played a pair of games under the lights at its annual fall tournament. The Roadrunners beat Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, 2-1, and fell to St. Edward’s, 4-3, on Saturday. The Roadrunners scored a pair of wins on Sunday against St. Mary’s (6-0) and Incarnate Word (6-3).

“Looking back, it was a great weekend for the UTSA Softball program,” second-year head coach Lori Cook said. “It’s nice to see the players get honored for their hard work and dedication at the ring ceremony on Friday night. They are very deserving of everything they’ve received over the past three or four seasons.

“Turning the lights on for the first time Saturday night was an awesome experience. Having lights gives us the flexibility to schedule more home games and bring high-profile programs to Roadrunner Field. There’s no doubt it’s a huge asset to our program.”
