HOUSTON – The UTSA women’s tennis team continued its strong performance at the Rice Invitational on Saturday.
Sophomores Nathalie Wallin, Sandra Kukla and Monika Drabkova and junior Tanya Hasking all picked up wins in singles play. Wallin and Hasking won their matches via default, while Drabkova defeated Stephanie Rodriguez of Lee in straight sets (6-0, 6-1). Kukla also won her match in straight sets against Momei Qu (6-2, 6-4). Freshman Holly Phillips also was in action, but she dropped her match against Bianca Simpson from Prairie View A&M (6-2, 6-3).
In doubles play, sophomore Karen Scida and Hasking teamed up for an 8-5 win over Georgia Tech’s Striplin and McDowell in the quarterfinals, but they lost a heartbreaker in the semifinals to Illinois’ Finnegan and Fudge. Wallin and Kukla paired up for an 8-4 win over Brown and Guerrier from Prairie View A&M, while Holly Phillips and sophomore Eva Silvester fell to Illinois’ Dave and Cuadra (8-5).
The Roadrunners conclude play on Sunday.
