SAN ANTONIO – Junior Adam Becker and freshman Nenad Maric teamed up for a doubles victory against Texas, while sophomores Andre Moreira and Robin Fernandes advanced to the quarterfinals of Flight A Singles to highlight a solid day for the UTSA men’s tennis team at the UTSA Invitational.
Becker and Maric teamed up to beat Jon Weigand and Evan Bridges of Texas, 8-6 in the first round of the Flight A Doubles bracket. The duo will face Stephen Shields and Mike Beatty of Texas A&M in the quarterfinal round at 9:30 a.m. Saturday.
Moreira dropped Caleb Bullis of Tyler Junior College in the first round of the Flight A Singles bracket, 6-2, 6-3, and advanced to Saturday’s quarterfinals with a 6-1, 6-2 decision against Arlen Domoney of Louisiana-Lafayette.
Fernandes handed Brett Bernstein of Texas-Pan American a 6-0, 6-2 defeat in the opening round of Flight A before moving on to the quarters with a 7-6, 6-2 victory against Lamar’s Macjek Bogusz.
Moreira will face Antoine Laberibe of Tyler Junior College and Fernandes meets Bridges in the quarterfinal round at 10:30 a.m. Saturday.
Maric, who had a bye in the first round, picked up a victory in the second round of Flight B, handling Tyler Cobb of Lamar, 6-2, 6-0. Freshman Ty Lunn downed Kody Duplechin of Lamar, 7-5, 6-3, in the first round of Flight B before falling to Carlos Bataller of Tyler Junior College, 6-0, 6-0.
In other action, Becker beat Tyler Lyon of St. Edward’s in the first round of Flight A, 7-6, 7-5, before falling, 6-1, 6-1, to Shaun Ellsion of Louisiana-Lafayette in the second round. Senior Nate Avila fell to Sergio Herrera of Monterrey Tech, 6-3, 6-4, in the Flight A Singles Consolation bracket after a first round loss in Flight A Singles action.
The UTSA Invitational continues Saturday and Sunday at the UTSA Tennis Center and Sonterra Country Club. Admission is free.
