UTSA women finish fourth, men 13th at Stanford Invitational

STANFORD, Calif. - Led by a pair of top-20 finishes from senior Hope Jimenez and freshman Faith Barlow, the UTSA women’s cross country team finished fourth in the seeded 4,000-meter race Saturday evening on the Stanford Golf Course. Senior Benson Cheserek posted a top-50 collegiate finish to lead the Roadrunner men to a 13th-place showing in the seeded 8,000m race.

Jimenez covered the 4k loop in a time of 15:06 to finish 11th among collegians and 16th overall, while Barlow was close behind in 19th overall (14th) with a 15:16 clocking.

Freshman Dana Mecke also crossed in the top 30 runners, finishing 23rd among collegians in 15:40, while seniors Veronica Silva (24th, 15:41) and Brianna Mendez (31st, 15:59) rounded out the top five. Freshmen Katy Spence (40th, 16:25) and Farrah Moore (42nd, 16:42) also ran.

Olympian Jennifer Toomey won the race in 14:02, leading a trio of unattached runners that finished ahead of the top collegian, Lindsay Allen of Stanford (14:21).

In the team standings, UTSA scored 103 points for fourth place, just ahead of Navy (105). Stanford won with 33 points, followed by Simon Fraser (34), a university in British Columbia, and Cal Poly (73).

In a loaded field in the men’s 8k, Cheserek was 63rd overall and 49th among collegians with a 25:15 clocking. Senior Aaron Castro was right behind in 25:24, good enough for 54th among collegians and 76th overall.

Junior Carlos Perez was UTSA’s third finisher, crossing in 25:59 for 70th, while freshman Corey Vargas (99th, 27:08) and senior Larry Brooks (101st, 27:12) completed the top five.

The Roadrunners scored 365 for 13th in the 19-team field. Stanford won with 42, followed by UC Santa Barbara (56), Chico State (79), California (113) and UC Irvine (127).

Freshman Bryan Ugochukwu finished 41st in the men’s 4,000m race, placing 41st in the field.

UTSA is off until the Texas Invitational on Oct. 14.
